Joe Corrigan’s excellence in goal prevented a heavier set-back in the opening game of the West German tour against a Hertha side back in the Bundesliga for the first time in two years.
The hosts capitalised on a Tommy Caton error in the 5th minute when City’s pivot misjudged the bounce of Rolf Blau’s long flighted pass down the right. In nipped Werner Kiilmaier to outsprint Tommy and fiercely shoot the first goal past City’s helpless ’keeper.
A corner from Hubert Schmitz in the 52nd minute was headed on for Killmaier to” nod home his second.
It was a debut night for Chris Jones, a free transfer player from Tottenham having a tour trial, and for 19 year old trialist Barry Keough, from the Dublin club Home Farm. The Irish midfielder was subbed in the 53rd minute by Andy May, but despite City’s improved determination in the second period defeat always looked definite.
