PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCESTER EVENING NEWS 8TH AUGUST 1978
Manchester City manager Tony Book is giving away no secrets as he protects his side’s European ambitions next season.
As the Blues swing into the second half of their busy pre-season tour Book is almost certain to throw up a smokescreen by pitching in his virtual unknown youngsters for tonight’s match against Heracles, a Second Division Dutch team.
… At least one youngster who should be given his chance is Tony Henry, a 20 year old North Easterner. Originally a midfielder who could also play in the back four, Henry is now showing his versatility and paces as a marksman.
He scored twice as a second half substitute in last night’s sweeping 7-0 victory over Hamar when Brian Kidd also struck at the double to take his tally to seven in three games.
Henry alongside Kidd would be a useful experiment, more so since Mike Channon hobbled painfully on ankle and calf knocks as City left Oslo early this morning.
England winger Peter Barnes returns home today for checks by a specialist on his troublesome right knee.
Said Barnes before leaving the party: “I’m hoping that treatment and rest will do the trick and that I will be fit for the start of the season.”
