NICOLAS ANELKA OPENS THE SCORING
WHAT THE PRESS SAID
This was not quite vintage Fowler, the unerring finisher of his Liverpool heyday, but he was a matchless presence behind Nicolas Anelka for one ten minute spell.
Claudio Reyna who hobbled off after 25 minutes, was the first to benefit when he ran on to a Fowler through ball, then cut back across the Groclin box and – with goalkeeper and defenders in a pile on the floor – smashed the ball over the bar.
The uncertainty of goalkeeper Liberda was evident when City scored, but it would not have been possible without Fowler bisecting the defence with a superbly angled ball into the path of Anelka. The Frenchman undid the offside trap with the timing of his sprint and, as Liberda hesitated, lifted the ball over the goalkeeper with one sweet touch.
