The game was played on a snow covered pitch and City were well on top for most of the game, but Grimsby against the run of play scored two first half goals a header from Cullen in the 21st minute and Stockin adding a second after 25 minutes
After the interval City continued to press and drew level. Bennett the Grimsby custodian dropped the ball and Joe Hayes was the ‘Johnny on the spot’ to poke it over the line for City’s first  and then Colin Barlow bagged the equaliser with just 11 minutes left. to earn a replay however the Blues should have won with Bill McAdams being the major villain missing two sitters.
