ONE OF TWO GOALS FOR DEREK PARLANE
FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAME 26TH AUGUST 1989
It was a case of “After the Lord Mayor’s Show” for City as they fell, unexpectedly to Fulham at Maine Road.
… Riding high after their display against Grimsby, the Blues underestimated a Fulham side that won 3-2 after an exciting game. It took only 4 minutes for the visitors to establish a lead, Bond and Phillips both floundering as Coney danced past them to beat Alex Williams. Power provided a centre for Parlane to head an equaliser (10 mins.) and then the summer paint on the woodwork suffered as both Smith and Cunningham struck it.
Sealy put Fulham back in front, Williams parrying a Davies cross directly to him, then in 65 minutes a spectacular overhead kick by Wilson put the Londoners further in front. Coney then tried to burst the side netting before City regained a little respectability with Parlane grabbing a second, thanks to sub. Tolmie’s pass.
