FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDIOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 26TH DECEMBER 1989
… A slight hiccup occurred the next week with a 2-3 reverse at Fulham, a game City should have won having been twice in front. A Baker penalty opened the scoring, ‘keeper Stannard having brought down Wilson, then Lewington equalised following a free-kick awarded against Alex Williams.
A fair amount of needle crept into the game and several of the tackles were of a somewhat robust nature, then football came back to the fore, as Melrose headed a second City goal after ten minutes of the second half, finishing off an accurate move and Phillips cross, and the Blues looked set for the points.
Fulham had other ideas. Robert Wilson headed an equaliser with two minutes left, then a scorching 20 yard shot from Houghton clinched a home win in the final seconds of the game.
