A goal by Everton skipper Mick Lyons virtually ended Manchester City’s slim chances of the First Division title at Maine Road last night.
City had started in carnival mood, kicking plastic footballs into the crowd to salute their fans, and were quickly ahead through leading scorer Brian Kidd, who slotted home a Joe Royle centre. Non-stop Asa Hartford set up the move. But that Lyons’ goal in the 79th minute forced City manager Tony Book to concede the title to Liverpool.
