FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 10TH FEBRUARY 1990
A visit to Crystal Palace resulted in a splendid 2-1 win, even more admirable as it was a fightback after conceding an early goal, Gray scoring spectacularly after a 14th minute corner. Then the Blues rolled up their sleeves and the inspirational Phillips took charge as he prompted many a City attack, leading by example as he rammed home an equaliser.
From then on the outcome was never in question. We dominated the game and could have had a more handsome winning margin had not Gordon Smith been toiled, firstly by ‘keeper Wood and then by his own mistiming of a shot. As it was, we had to settle for just one more goal, Wilson dispossessing Locke and racing upfield to beat Wood for the winner.
