Trialist Paul Shaw had the ball in the City net in the fifth minute… but the goal was disallowed because of an incident in the penalty area.
But a goal for Crewe was not long delayed. They went ahead after eight minutes when Waller’s centre on the right was flicked up by Shaw for Cliss to crash the ball into the roof of the net.
City hit back and Parlane landed a drive from outside the penalty area against the Crewe bar.
City began to pose more of a threat and equalised on the half-hour. Kevin Bond crashed home the penalty after Smith had been brought down by Crewe goalkeeper Longley.
Longley had to move smartly off his line to check City as Kinsey surged through and in the 40th minute the improving Blues snatched a 2-1 lead. Kinsey burst through to beat the advancing Longley with a nicely judged shot.
City plundered a third goal on half-time. Kinsey crashed a shot against the upright and Parlane tucked away the rebound.
City brought on Redmond and Beckford in place of Murray and Parlane at the start of the second half and went further ahead in the 53rd minute. Smith pounced on a misplaced pass by Waller and shot low into the corner of the Crewe net.
Crewe tried desperately to get back into the game but could make little impact in attack, and in the 71st minute substitute Beckford slotted in City’s fifth goal.
