FROM JIMMY FRIZZELL’S PROGRAMME NOTES IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 26TH DECEMBER 1987
The Simod Cup was important to us and the game against Chelsea represented a chance to go into the New Year involved in all three cup competitions. But, on the night, we never really got going. We had a good chance early on, when Tony Adcock knocked one over the bar from a good position, and from then on, the game seemed to slip away from us.
Certainly not one of our better performances. Chelsea played well but we gave them far too much room. They played with far greater fluency, whereas we seemed to want one or two extra touches.
We had no reason to feel overawed by Chelsea since we had comprehensively beaten one of the best teams in the First Division, Nottingham Forest, in the Littlewoods Cup earlier in the season. And in view of our impressive display at Millwall, we felt sure we had enough ability to take us into the next round.
It was particularly disappointing when 6,000 turned up at a time of the year when money is tight. Too many of our players were under par and, in the end, we couldn’t complain about the result.
