Maybe it was their fourth game in 8 days but City were a jaded outfit at Maine Road on 20th January. They were expected to beat a struggling Chelsea side on the snow-covered pitch but allowed the Pensioners to win 3-2.
Corrigan was back but Watson failed a fitness test on the morning of the game. Manager Tony Book put in Tommy Booth whose own fitness was suspect and it was a gamble that failed after 34 minutes. Tommy limped off, Kidd took his place, and Ron Futcher entered the fray up front.

It took Power only 8 minutes to open the scoring, cutting through the Chelsea defence to beat Bonetti convincingly, but it was a short-lived lead. On the quarter-hour the City defensive wall showed cracks as Mackenzie drilled a clever free-kick past Corrigan.
Ron Futcher then came on as a substitute for Booth and it didn’t take him long to make his mark, restoring City’s lead before the interval. The second half was a City horror story, however.
A quarter of an hour to go and from Walker’s comer, Osgood was in the right place to force Corrigan to pick the ball out of the back of the net. And worse was to come. As the Blues abandoned all caution to look for a winner, and to make up for the chances they had squandered, the visitors broke away. Langley dispossessed Owen in the Chelsea half to find Walker on the halfway line. He galloped towards the City goal, Blues’ defenders trailing in his wake, and scored with a shot under the diving Corrigan…
