FROM AN ARTICLE “THAT GOAL” PUBLISHED IN THE CITY MAGAZINE MAY 2002
Clive Allen was one of football’s great goal poachers. Wherever the talented Striker played, he scored goals by the Hatful Thanks to his uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time. He didn’t need to look to know where the goal was, his instinct took care of that for him and this was the case when City travelled to Stamford Bridge on a dull, Autumn Saturday afternoon back in 1989.
…Chelsea led 1-0 as the game entered the 90th minute and as the home side pressed for a killer second, the linesman flagged for a Chelsea free kick after a foul on one of their forwards midway in the City half. Incredibly the referee chose to ignore his assistant and waved the game on. The ball was hoofed into the Chelsea half to Allen who, without a glance, cracked the ball on the volley from 30 yards out and into the roof of the net off the underside of the bar.
The travelling City fans went wild and the home fans vented their anger at the referee who must have regretted his decision in what was a rare act of bravery by an official who duly blew his whistle for full-time seconds later. A point earned for City…
