FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 2ND JANUARY 1989
… City travelled to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City where they survived a first half onslaught. Watson was the man who held firm a shaky defence, yet he too was powerless when the home team went ahead after 9 minutes. Gerry Gow provided a near post pass for Ritchie to head home. Tainton hit the City the bar but after the break it was the Blues who looked the more dangerous.
Ron Futcher headed in a Channon cross for the equalise and Shaw in the Bristol goal was severely tested by Owen and Ron Futcher. A possible penalty was refused after Norman Hunter upended Channon and with a little more luck the Blues might have won.
