City’s troubles at Brighton started after only eight minutes when Jimmy Case shot the home side ahead.
Blues’ skipper Paul Power was taken off with a leg injury after half an hour and City were in bigger trouble five minutes later.
Neil Smillie moved in to score Brighton’s second with the City defence in tatters.
And the Blues were left high and dry after 70 minutes when ex-City striker Mike Robinson snatched Brighton’s third.
And Robinson rubbed it in for City with another goal in the last minute.
