Injury hit City held out for 58 minutes at Brighton before ex-Maine Road striker Mike Robinson grabbed the first goal.
Then Andy Ritchie, the former United striker, moved in for the second seven minutes later.
Gary Williams and Ritchie again made it a disastrous day for the Blues.
And City’s only consolation was a 77th minute goal from Kevin Reeves.
