Manchester City’s hope of rescuing a season of shattered pride was undermined last night by the electrifying skills of tiny Danish destroyer Allan Simonsen.
Simonsen, former European Footballer of the year, and in his last season with Borussia, was behind the 66th minute equalising goal that had their coaching chief Udo Lattek dancing a jig of delight on the touchline.
It was exactly the result Lattek wanted from this UEFA Cup quarter final first leg, and City now face an enormous task to stay in the competition.
When Mike Channon struck in the 25th minute for City it seemed the doorway to glory was open.
Asa Hartford hit a shot fiercely into the middle, and after the ball hit Peter Barnes, Channon whipped in his fifth goal in six games.
But, seconds before Borussia equalised, Simonsen had sounded the red alert when he raced through the middle to unleash a stunning shot, only for it to be discounted for offside.
Then a quick change of pace and direction from Simonsen unhinged City’s defensive cover to give Ewald Lienen the chance to score.
A game that began with the Germans defending sedately had a fiery finale when fists flew briefly as both teams struggled for a crucial goal.
The skirmish followed a challenge by Paul Power on goalkeeper Wolfgang Kneib, who had twice defied City with “knees-up” saves from the ever-busy Hartford and Barnes.
