I started five of the next seven matches, but the one I didn’t away to Blackburnleft Machin in no doubt as to what the City fans thought of me being on the bench. It was a red hot day, at Ewood Park, and Roy Bailey put the manager’s bench against the fence just in front of where the City fans were housed. I’d played well the week before in the 2-1 win over Swindon but here I was, dropped again, and when I came out, City fans behind were coming up and asking me ‘Why aren’t you playing Paul?’ I just said, ‘I haven’t a clue,’ and when Machin came out, the City fans were giving him pelters, proper lifelong Blues and no-nonsense Mancs and some of them let’s just say, wee blunt speakers, with the gist being, ‘Why the fuck is he not playing?’ Machin got slaughtered that day and I actually felt sorry for him, it was that bad. Afterwards, and after we’d been dicked 4-0, Roy got a major bollocking.
‘Who put that fucking bench there?’ Machin asked. Roy said ‘Me, it was cold in the dugout, and it was a nice day.’ He’d meant well, but he’d unwittingly thrown Machin to the dogs that day.
