JOHN ROBERTS WRITING IN THE GUARDIAN 23RD AUGUST 1978
Arsenal, minus the admlrable Pat Jennings in goal and the excellent Liam Brady in midfield, were worthy of their draw at Maine Road last night. Paul Barron. a 24-year-old bought from Plymouth for £60,000. filled Jennings‘ role adequately in his first appearance, showing no signs of nerves when City applied themselves better in the second half. although Mike Channon helped a little by shooting directly at the goalkeeper‘s body when he might to have scored midway through that half.
Play on a pleasant summer evening began with Watson, the England centre back, prone to dreamy interludes in City’s defence. His lack of concentration put his new partner, Paul Futcher, at a distinct disadvantage and almost cost his side two early goals.
MacDonald ran beyond reach of Futcher and Clements a yard from the left touchline and only had enough energy left to hit a tired centre that rolled beneath Watson’s nose to the feet of Stapleton. It was difficult to assess whether Stapleton‘s irritation or Corrigan’s
swift diving interception was the more relevant factor to the save.

Channon failed to beat Barron with an equally promising opportunity a minute later. though it was Arsenal who created the greater problems and Watson’s idyll continued and enabled Price to put a gentle pass into the stride of Stapleton. On this occasion,
Corrigan diverted the shot with a leg.
Barnes switched wings with regularity but little success, sulfering from a general lack of deep understanding between Channon and Kidd and when Power made a enterprising run down the left, the far post was vacant of sky blue shirts when the ball was crossed.
Rice. Price and Walford were hardly a proven midfield trio, but were a match at least for Hartford, Keegan and Power, and few City supporters were surprised when Arsenal narrowly beat the half-time whistle to open the scoring. Price found Sunderland, whose
powerful shot from the edge of the box carried too much force for Corrigan to hold, and MacDonald tapped the ball over the line at the far post.

Young was booked for fouling Channon five minutes into the second half, and almost on the hour, City equalised. This time it was Arsenal’s centre back, 0’l.eary, who disappeared into a world of his own making and made a careless back pass that was eagerly pounced upon by Keegnn, who sent Power on a frantic but effective run through the middle. Power’s shot hit the inside of a post and, with Young at his heels, Kidd completed the move by pushing the ball home.
Although both Kidd and Futcher went close with shots, the match ended wiih Sunderland almost securing a second Point for Arsenal.
