FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 18TH MARCH 1989
… Highbury was the next stop the following Saturday. Owen replaced Reid and Deyna was preferred to Barnes. City performed creditably, intent on restoring lost pride, and took advantage whenever possible of Arsenal’s losing Young from their defence after only 23 minutes.
Channon gave City the lead with a devastating free-kick, having seen a huge gap to be exploited in the Gunners’ defensive wall, but Arsenal, with Rix and Stapleton looking menacing, forced an equaliser after 52 minutes through Sunderland when he knocked in Heeley’s corner. The Blues claimed handball; the referee disagreed.
